The Importance of Business Sustainability
August 2011

Hello. And welcome to At the Center.

More often than not, these video messages focus on issues of importance that impact the broader business climate in Lancaster County. We intentionally try to stay away from promoting our events because we have other communication outlets that lend themselves well to that purpose.

But this month I am making an exception. Because two of our upcoming events relate very directly to your better business climate and, in turn, stand to have a positive impact on our broader business community. The two programs are our Sustainable Business Conference and our Business Contingency Planning Workshop.

Up first, on September 16, is our Sustainable Business Conference. Now, I will be the first to admit that “sustainability” has become somewhat of a buzz word that means many things to many different people. But to be clear, our conference will focus on the Three P’s of Sustainability: Performance, People and Planet. The conference will feature keynote speaker, Jeff Baldassari, CEO of The Taylor Group, an Ohio-based manufacturer that was recently named the Green-Plus Sustainable Enterprise of the Year. Also included in the conference will be a host of workshops featuring Chamber-member experts speaking on issues ranging from employee engagement to energy conservation and waste-stream management to leadership transition – all essential elements of ensuring your business’s and our community’s sustainability. Do your company a favor, do your employees a favor and do your community a favor….make this conference a priority!

The second program I want to bring to your attention is very much related to business sustainability….and that is business contingency planning.

On September 27, we will be kicking off a four-part series of business contingency planning workshops. This series is a repeat from a very popular program we offered two years ago that was extremely well-received by our membership. In fact, feedback from the participants included words such as informative, engaging, essential, complete and excellent.

This state-of-the –art training program, developed by Horst Insurance, is facilitated by local experts who will help guide employers and their organization in developing a contingency plan specific to their business and industry. The sessions are organized so you can involve several people from your organization –from CEO to IT to HR and everything in between. And, to add icing on the cake, the workshop series will end with you having an actual contingency plan in place for your company –a service you could have paid thousands of dollars for.

Make no mistake about it…disaster can strike any one of us and in many different ways –from weather to IT; theft to fire—and it is incumbent upon all of us to be prepared. Which is why we think it is so important you are aware of this series and why we hope you consider getting involved.

You can learn more about these two programs –and others that are part of a very busy fall programming season at The Chamber – at our website at

Please check it out. Your business and our community will be the better for it.

Until next time, stay informed, stay engaged and stay with us, At the Center.
